Coffee Industry

When it comes down to it, there are only a few truly big players in the coffee shop industry. There is the one brand (Starbucks) which has a presence virtually everywhere and of course if you're in the UK and you're looking for a cup to go, this chain is the one you're most likel 00004000 y to see, along with Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero.

The national and multinational coffee chains have their good qualities and many would argue that they have become so successful precisely because they serve a good cup of coffee. However, others refuse to patronize the big names in favor of their local coffee shops, whether because they sincerely think that their coffee is better or out of loyalty to their local businesses.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room of the coffee industry is of course Starbucks. With locations on every continent except Antarctica, it's hard not to find one of their locations no matter where you are. Besides its coffee shops, the company roasts and packages its coffee for sale in grocery stores in many parts of the world.

Based in the UK, Caffe Nero offers a menu largely focused on espresso based drinks, but has recently expanded their offerings to include flavored coffees and cold coffee drinks. The company has most of their locations in the UK, but has started to branch out as of late, opening coffee shops in the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.

Costa Coffee is another UK chain who has built their brand on their "Italianness", something which extends to the dAcor of their coffee shops as well as the style of their slow roasted mocha Italia house blend. The chain was founded by two brothers from Italy, though there is certainly a case to be made that the company is catering to British palates more so than presenting coffee as it would be found in Italy, though the chain has found great success in the UK, becoming one of the nation's most popular coffee shop chains.

Gloria Jean's is a chain that was founded in the United States, but you could certainly be forgiven for thinking of the company as more of an Australian phenomenon. The company is now wholly Australian owned and more than half of Gloria Jean's coffee shops are located in the country as well. The company has its fans, but has also been criticized by some consumers for serving drinks which are very high in sugar and for their reticence to disclose nutritional information for the items on their menu.

While the big names listed here are certainly a major part of the world's coffee shop industry, a lot of the business in any given country or region goes to independent coffeehouses and regional or national chains like Scotland's Beanscene, CafA Coffee Day and Barista in India and the San Francisco Bay area's CafA Trieste. These companies may not have the kind of renown that a multinational like Starbucks enjoys, but they are able to control enough of a share of their local markets to remain competitive with the industry giants.
