John Parks, Co-Owner of Armeno, explains: "There's only one pound of Maui Moka produced for every 74 pounds of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, yet gourmet coffee drinkers mistakenly regard Blue Mountain as the rarest coffee."
One of the reasons for the scarcity of Maui Moka is the size of its bean. "It takes about 3,000 standard coffee beans to make a pound. But Maui Moka beans are so small, that it takes more than 8,100 of them to make a pound of coffee", said Parks.
Though both Hawaiian Kona and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee can be grown by dozens of farms, there is only one coffee plantation in the world that grows Maui Moka.
"It's a small, family-owned farm in the Kaanapali region of Maui", explains Parks. "We've spent years building a relationship with the owner of this plantation. But even with our connections, we're lucky to get a regular supply of Maui Moka."
