World 2010/11 coffee output revised up to 133.3 mln bags – ICO

HANOI (Reuters) - World coffee production in the current 2010/2011 crop reached 133.3 million bags, a rise of 8.2 percent from the previous crop year, the International Coffee Organization said, revising up slightly an earlier estimate.

While output from Africa, Mexico and Central America were revised down from ICO's May report, the London-based coffee body raised estimates for Asia, Oceania and South America, based on member information, its June report seen on Wednesday showed.

It revised up global production from 133.1 million 60-kg bags estimated in the May report, when the ICO said output rose 8.1 percent from the previous season.

Coffee From Peru – History and Background

Coffee was introduced to Peru in the late 1700's. The Typica varietal of Arabica still accounts for about 35% of the country's exports. The Bourbon varietal was introduced in the 1950's. Combined, these two varietals make up about 60% of the Peruvian coffee production. Peru exports primarily newer varietals such as Caturra and Catimor.

Peru has everything to be a leading coffee producing country in multiple categories but it is not. Why is that?

  • Peru has the high altitudes and partial shade desired for Coffea arabica in much more readily available land quantities than other coffee growing areas such as Jamaica or...

The ICO kept unchanged output from Brazil at 48.1 million bags, Vietnam's production at 18.5 million bags and Colombia's output at 9.2 million bags while revising up Indonesia's crop to 8.86 million bags from 8.5 million bags estimated earlier.

As such, the ICO's figure is above a forecast at 400,000 tonnes, or 6.7 million bags, by the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute, as well as a projection in May at 520,000 tonnes, or 8.67 million bags by the Indonesian Coffee Exporters Association.

Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia and Indonesia are the world's biggest coffee producers, with combined output accounting for 63.5 percent of global production in the current crop year.

The latest estimates for the next 2011/2012 are not yet available for all exporting countries but sketchy estimates and the absence of precise figures would encourage speculation on world production for the remainder of the year, the ICO said.

It cited the Brazilian authorities' estimates of 2011/2012 production as showing an output of 43.5 million bags, comprising 32.2 million bags of arabica and 11.4 million bags of robusta.

Coffee futures fell on Tuesday as the immediate tightness of supply appeared to have eased, dealers said. ICE September arabica futures lost 1.20 cents to finish at $2.5785 per lb and Liffe September robusta futures dropped $63 to close at $2,291 a tonne.

The 2011/2012 crop harvest is under way in Brazil while Vietnam will begin picking cherries from late October or early November.
